Active School Week 2022
Our annual Active School Week was a big success again this year. The weather was with us and we had a fantastic week of fun and participation for all.
One of the highlights was our novelty races day where each senior class paired up with their junior class partners. Junior Infants paired up with Third class for mixed relay races, Senior Infants paired up with Fourth class for egg and spoon relay races, horse back races, wheelbarrow races, sack races and partner runs. First class paired up with Fifth class for relay races using pool noodles as ‘horses’, limbo races and mixed relay races. Second class paired up with Sixth class for a water running challenge race, potato and spoon races, three legged races and paired running.
The partnerships between classes continued throughout the week. Junior classes teamed up with senior classes for throwing and catching games, paired rounders, stations with soccer, pot shot, relay races and hoola hoop skills, playground games, skipping, tug of war and paired soccer games.
Classes were kept active and busy all week with orienteering in The Castle Park, Swimming at The Watershed, Cycling skills for fourth class and hurling skills with Philly Campion our visiting coach from our local GAA club, Dicksboro.
There was lots of fun with balloon volleyball, blowing and popping bubbles in the wind outside, running around James’ Park, Space Chase on You Tube and an exercise class with the children as the instructors. Some classes had a cross bar challenge, a mini rounders league as well as lots of kicking, hurling and camogie skills.
Staff Versus Sixth Class Challenge
We had our first ever staff versus students event this year and what fun we all had. Our school is so big that we decided to let sixth class only participate and let it be a good send off for them from our school to top off all the excellent activities that they have done in our school for the 8 years that they have spent with us.
We had a penalty shoot out, with staff in goal at first. The goal seemed to be the best position as nerves often got the better of the penalty takers. Towards the end the students stood in goal. There was a great atmosphere and cheers for all as the rest of the school watched on from the sidelines.
Victory went to the staff on the day but most importantly fun was had by all.
