Dear Grace Letter by Orla Browne
Dear Grace:
There I was, sitting on my hard plastic chair, my thoughts, memories and dreams whizzing around my head.
The clock was ticking and my concentration was slowly slipping away. Just when I felt like I was being grabbed by the hand that would whisk me away into a land of slumber, my teacher Mr. Hoyne told us to listen up closely. He said there was a young girl called Grace who had died from a rare blood disorder. I was really upset after hearing your story but was happy to know your memory still lives on in the hearts of many people today and hopefully for evermore.
My name is Orla Browne. At the moment the wind is blowing and the flowers are steadily swaying from side to side. The faint breeze is quietly tapping on the window of my classroom in St. Canices School. My hand is slowly moving across my page and my ink is starting to rapidly disappear.
Since 2011 I have lived in Kilkenny in a rented house. I hear Cork is a very nice county. Did you enjoy living there? I’m going on holidays to Cork soon. Kilkenny is a great place for holidays … if your holidays usually include wellington boots and an umbrella. When I was younger I lived in Oxford, do you know where that is Grace? Near London. Well that’s where I used to live. I am in 5th class and my teacher is Mr. Hoyne. I like school except you get a lot of homework, don’t you Grace?
As I mentioned before, the weather out here is terribly wet and damp. Wherever you are Grace, please, please, tell God to turn of the waterworks. My hand is starting to ache now but I don’t really mind. I can hear my dad talking away on Skype and I can see my little sister watching TV.
Quite recently all the schools in Kilkenny took part in the Peace Proms, which involved singing, dancing and playing instruments. It was a very enjoyable experience for singers and audience alike. The children who did not attend the Peace Proms were at an equally exiting concert in Dublin. This was for those in the orchestra or who do music. Did you do music Grace, and if you did, what instrument did you play.
My hamster Snowy is noisily rattling her cage bars and I am starting to feel peckish. I will be back in a moment; I just need to ask what I am having for dinner ….. My dad has just said that we are having baked beans, potato wedges and fish fingers for dinner and it will be ready in about fifteen to twenty minutes. I can’t wait!
Last year, hopes were high as it was the 2012 Olympic Games. They were held in London and countries from all over the world competed in the Games. I only knew a few Irish athletes who took part but here are their names, Katie Taylor the boxer, Joanne Cuddihy and Catriona Cuddihy. Did you know that the Cuddihy’s live on my road? I live two houses away from a family of athletes. Is that cool or what, Grace?
When the Cuddihy’s came down the road we had just finished the set-up for the homecoming. As the two heroes climbed out of the car, a giant roar of congratulations rose up. I had baked a cake especially for the homecoming. It was plain green and wasn’t the prettiest of sights but I got a surprise when the two athletes asked for seconds! Later on in the night when the younger children were tucked up in the bed, my cousin and I were working away squeezing oranges into a plastic Ribena jug. After we had made a whole jug full, we set out to see who would like some of our freshly squeezed orange juice. After a successful night, we went to bed only to wake up to another surprise. I had received an early Christmas card including a photo of the Cuddihy’s outside the Olympic village. It was from the athletes themselves.
Sorry, Grace, my dinner is ready. I will be back in a second, I promise.
I’m back-for once Snowy is actually staying quiet, what a miracle!
Last Christmas was a very exciting affair as it was my first Christmas in Kilkenny. We started by decorating our banisters with tinsel and hanging snowflakes from the ceiling. Eventually we got our Christmas tree. Do you like fake or real Christmas trees, Grace? I don’t really mind but my mum sure does. I came down at seven with my family and we started looking through our presents. From Santa I got a soda stream flavor kit, a magic trick selection and much more. From my family and friends I got books, and a lot of them, toys and of course my hamster, although she wasn’t wrapped up with a little bow on top!
I have a lot of hobbies. One of my hobbies is reading. I read an average of six to seven books a week. I also enjoy book writing, hockey, which I do on a Sunday, Irish dancing, in which I was awarded two trophies and two medals for my slip jig, my b-reel, my treble and my two hand reel, swimming which I do on Saturdays camogie which I also do on a Saturday, art which I do on a Friday, surfing in which I have won a couple of certificates and free hot chocolates, drama which I do on Thursday with an acting group called Jesters and percussion which I do on Monday after homework.
My sister has just run into the room and back out again. I wonder what she wants. Any idea Grace?
I live in Kilkenny. Kilkenny has great hurlers, Grace, great hurlers. Whenever we play against Galway we always chant: “they may have Supermacs but we have super cats!” You see Grace, Galway teams are sponsored by Supermacs and the Kilkenny teams are known as the Kilkenny Cats! Cool or what?
It is getting very late now and I am starting to feel tired but I am enjoying writing to you so much, so I might write a bit more. Only a bit!
Yesterday a Book Fair came to our school. I bought eight books and am planning on buying one more.
The books I have bought so far are: The Eddie Dickens Trilogy, no. 1, 2, 3, the further adventures of Eddie Dickens, no. 1 and 2. The sailing ship tree, something invisible, and my friend Walter.
I am starting to get a blister on my thumb and my dad has been calling for ages.
It has been a pleasure writing to you,
From Orla Browne.
Ps, I need you to do one more favor for me, could you please ask God to open the curtains a bit as well. Thanks in advance.
Bye.
