It is the custom in the school that 5th class children support their 6th class schoolmates by forming the choir for confirmation. As well as helping out on the day, this also gives the 5th class children an insight into the sacrament of confirmation and makes them familiar with the whole order of the ceremony. All 5th class pupils will be expected to sing at the Confirmation on Saturday May 11th. If there is a pressing reason why your child cannot be there please put a note in the homework diary to your 5th class teacher.
Board of Management News
The Board has completed the annual review of our Child Protection Statement and policy. A copy of this statement and our risk analysis is on display in the school foyer and will also be available on our school website www.stcanicesschool.ie from Tuesday May 7th. Our Designated Liaison Person is Principal Maria Comerford and in the case of her absence the Deputy Designated Liaison Person is Deputy Principal Peter Nolan. Any Child Protection concerns should be reported to the D.L.P.
The board has been in touch with gardaí and Kilkenny County Council regarding the traffic issues around the school. We are due to have a meeting sometime in May when the results of a Co. Co. Survey will be available.
Thank you for the great response to our “Mind our Children” sign outside the exit gate. It makes a huge difference when that space is left clear.
School Extension
Fr. Jim and I met with representatives of the NFDA who have been assigned our building project. The basic plan is to demolish the senior wing and rebuild it as a two storey wing. This will replace the eight existing classrooms and all the prefab accommodation.
The schedule is as follows: Design Oct/Nov 2019. Apply for planning Spring 2020. Commence work Autumn 2020--up to 18 month build time.
This is great news as it sees our project move into reality stage!
The object of the extension is to house the numbers we already cater for in the school. There is no question of increasing the school size by going to four class streams. The completed building will cater for 24 mainstream classes, (8x3) and 3/ 4 ASD classes with all the ancillary accommodation those numbers require.
I will keep you posted on the progress.
National Children’s Choir
We had two wonderful nights of song in St. Canice’s Cathedral prior to the Easter Holidays. Congratulations to all our 5th & 6th class pupils who performed so well at the concerts. Thank you to Mr Crowley, Ms Flynn, Ms Henderson, Mr Hoyne, Ms McKeown, Ms Tallis and Mr Stapleton for their work with the children and well done to Mr Nolan for bringing it all together and keeping the show on the road.
Twenty two of our 166 singers have been chosen to sing in the National Concert Hall on May 27th. They will sing the NCC repertoire with primary pupils from around the country. Well done .
Zamda Collection
Thank you for your generous response to the Zamda collection. €1402 was lodged to the charity. Mr McQuiian and Mr Stapleton will show the classes photos and clips of the school activities they engaged in during their fortnight in Zambia.
Sport
Hurling and camogie training and leagues continue on. Our boys panel will contest the County Final of the INTO sevens hurling next Wednesday.
Our “A” hurling team have won all their league matches and now await the knock out stages. Our “B” hurling panel lost the Roinn C quarter final today to a stronger Muckalee team.
Camogie wise, our A panel also await their knock out opponents. Our B panel won their quarter final and will play a semi final in the next two weeks.
As always a huge thanks to all the teachers who give so generously of their time and talents to facilitate all these sporting activities.
