Roinn A Semi final Replay Hard earned victory
16/6/2014
Hugginstown
St. Canices 0-8. Mooncoin 0-6
Just 72 hours after round one, we returned for the second leg of this epic battle today to Hugginstown. The weather was again roasting, as was the intensity of the battle onfield, and after a pulsating 53 minutes, we could eventually relax and consider what was a great win against a skilful and determined Mooncoin side.
The style of hurling was very similar to the drawn match- defensive play of high quality by both sides- hooking, blocking and fierce tackling meant scores were always going to be very hard to come by. A slight change in our defensive formation however, gave greater protection to us in front of goal, and where we conceded three goals the last day, today we conceded none. This basically made all the difference- we actually scored 1-3 less today, but only conceded 6 points in total.
At half time we led 0-4 to 0-1, and were happy enough. We had chances to score more but credits st be given to the Mooncoin defence- they were brilliant again today.
We opened the second half with a lovely Aaron Murphy point, but for the next 15 minutes, it was all about our defenders, as Mooncoin began to dominate. They levelled with four points in this period( two from frees), and it was only great defending from us that kept us alive. All six, and Ronan in goal, played a huge part in our win. David Delahunty starred all day long, at wing back first, and at full back near the end. Luke Morrissey had another great game, as did Cian Rowe on the other corner. Padraic Moylan had a huge influence at no. 3 and when moved to centre back late in the game, he took control. Niall Rowe improves with every game, and was very solid. Liam Moore was outstanding at centre back, and at midfield near the end. He cleared countless balls throughout, and hurled himself to a standstill for his team.
With the game in the balance, and with 7 minutes to go, David Conway( contender for man of the match) scored a crucial point to put us one ahead again. This was followed shortly by a Liam Moore free to increase the lead to two. When Mooncoin scored the next free, the difference was back to one(7 to 6) as we entered the last two minutes. Every ball was now crucial, and the individual battles to win possession were amazing. When Aaron Murphy scored a point( his third), we thought that might be that, but Pascal Connolly deemed that there would be almost three minutes of injury time. In that period, anything could have happened, but we held on and thankfully qualified to meet Garlscoil in the final on Thursday.
