7s Hurling Finals
Today in a wet, cold John's Park, we won our first ever county 7s competition. We had won our qualifying group, and today we came up against other group winners Carrickshock , Bennetsbridge and Lisdowney.
We were without Aaron Murphy, who was ill. He was replaced on the panel by the willing Rory O Connor.
Our first outing was against a good Carrickshock side. The early exchanges were evenly contested, and after the ten minute first half of play, we led 2-1 to 1-1. The keen contest continued for the second half, and we were fortunate enough to score the only two scores in the second half- two points, to give us victory 2-3 to 1-1.
Scorers: L Moore1-2. K Hackett 1-0 T Clifford 0-1(Ref: P Butler)
Our second game was against Bennettsbridge, who had been beaten by Lisdowney in their first game. We started well in this game and led 2-2 to 0-1 at half time. Our full panel of ten players got good game time in this match. When the Bridge goaled midway through the second half, they were back in the game, and it took two good late points from Timmy Clifford to seal our victory: Canices 2-4 Bridge 1-2. Scorers: T Clifford 1-3 L Moore 1-1
And so to our third and final opponents- Lisdowney. They had surprisingly been beaten by Carrickshock (having led by 5 points with 4 minutes to go!) in their second game. This meant that they needed to beat us to secure a playoff, while a draw would do us.
This was an epic game, with the tiring legs struggling to win every possession , and convert every chance. When referee Jim Fennelly blew the half time whistle, we were trailing 4-2 to 3-2. We drew our breaths, had a drink, and resolved to do all in our power to make history. Liam Moore definitely meant business- inside the next 5 minutes he had netted three times, and we were looking good. But, full credit to the Lisdowney lads, they were not giving up. They pointed, and goaled twice, before Killian Hackett pointed to level the scoring. What drama!- the ref declared two extra minutes of injury time. Our backs were to the wall. We defended heroically- hooks, blocks, pulls, shoulders and kicks(of ball), and eventually Jim blew the final whistle with the scores tied at 6-3 to 6-3. Never was a draw such a good result. Finishing on 5 points after two wins and a draw, we became county 7s champions for the first time.
