Science Blast at the RDS
Today, ( 2nd February 2020) Ms Clune Farrell's Third Class attended the ESB Science Blast in the RDS. Their project was entitled
' How strong are eggshells and where do they get their strength?
Through following scientific procedures they were really surprised to find that eggshells are very strong. 4 eggshells supported the weight of 35 Busy at Maths books which corresponds to 21.3 kg!!!! They discovered that what makes eggshells so strong is their shape. The egg's curved shape distributes the pressure all around the egg. It's only when uneven pressure is applied ( such as tapping it against the side of a bowl) that the egg will break. However if you catch an egg with two fingers at the top and bottom it is very difficult to break
