v Thomastown
19/3/2015
James Park
Round 1 Roinn A League
St. Canices 2-9 Thomastown 2-6
We began the defence of our Roinn A title today with a hard earned win over a strong Thomastown side in sunny James Park. With the new 6 team Roinn A league format, there’s no doubt these two teams will do battle again before the year is out. We already know them well, narrowly beating them in the football decider.
The fortunes today swayed one way, and then the other. Thomastown were strong right from the throw in, and powered home a goal in their first attack-.not looking good for us. But then we dominated the remainder of the half, and led 1-5 to 1-1 at half time. Our goal came from a bullet like shot from Sean Maher, at the end of a beautiful bit of combination play, while some of our points were lovely scores.
In the second half, the Thomastown lads showed their mettle, and when they goaled nearing the end, they led 2-5 to 1-7. But we showed good determination ourselves, and scored 1-2 to their 0-1 to emerge victorious. This was a top class opening game of the season. Both teams showed their talents, and both will be expecting to have a day out in Nowlan Park in a couple of short months!
