There was a garda checkpoint outside the school this morning as part of Operation Storm to reduce criminal activity in the area. The aim was to heighten awareness of child safety in vehicles.
After the morning rush the Gardaí called in and spoke to some classes. They asked me to highlight the main areas in which children’s safety was being compromised.
Basically there was a significant number of children not wearing seatbelts and of those who were wearing them, the majority were wearing them incorrectly underneath their arm instead of over the shoulder as they should be.
Secondly, they noticed many children taking their safety belt off as they approached the school instead of when the vehicle stopped.
Finally, children should be using child seats or booster seats until at least the end of third class and possibly for longer depending on the child’s height and weight. (Details on Garda Website)
The garda commented that if he had been giving out penalty points this morning, most drivers would have received them!
We will discuss travel safety with the classes next week. Please check that your own arrangements are legal and up to standard.
I have also been informed that there will be another checkpoint before June which will be a law enforcement one rather than an awareness one.
